TikTok Shop Seller Fees Explained: How to Calculate Your Real Profit
Customer payment is not seller profit. The buyer may pay an item amount and shipping, but TikTok Shop referral fee, optional creator affiliate commission, product cost, fulfillment, packaging, and advertising you buy yourself all sit between that ticket and leftover cash.
This guide explains those pieces for a United States TikTok Shop seller scenario in USD, using the same production engine and default completed-order example as the TikTok Shop Fee Calculator. It is not a worldwide fee encyclopedia and not a substitute for Seller Center. Rates, category treatment, and market rules can change. Confirm what your shop is charged in Seller Center and in current official TikTok Shop documentation. Platform-agnostic order math is in How to Calculate E-commerce Profit. Site-wide modeling rules are on the methodology page. Profit For Sellers is not affiliated with or endorsed by TikTok Shop or TikTok.
TikTok Shop fees at a glance
Not every charge hits every order. The overview below is the same sourced United States schedule the calculator uses, last checked against TikTok Shop Seller University on 2026-09-09. It is an educational US / USD model—not a claim that every seller, category, or market pays the same percentage.
| Component | Current US model |
|---|---|
| Referral fee | 6.0% for most listed categories, or 5.0% for specified eligible categories, on Customer Payment + Platform Discount − Tax (buyer sales tax omitted in this model) |
| Creator affiliate commission | Only on creator-attributed orders, at the rate you enter. Estimated as actual paid item price × commission rate. Shipping is not in this model's commission base. |
| Refund administration fee | Educational only: 20.0% of refunded referral fee, capped at $5.00 per SKU. Not mixed into completed-sale profit. |
| Seller operating costs | Product cost, fulfillment, packaging, other variable cost, and allocated advertising you enter |
| Legacy transaction / service fee | Not added to modern completed orders in this model |
Referral fee
The principal TikTok Shop platform selling fee on a qualified completed US order. 6% — Most categories is the default sourced preset; 5% — Eligible categories is the other auto-filled category scenario. Custom uses the Seller Center rate you type.
Creator affiliate commission
A seller-selected collaboration cost on creator-attributed orders. It is not the referral fee, and it is not charged on every sale. Organic/self-sold orders model this line as zero.
Refund administration fee
A documented US after-sales retention of 20.0% of the refunded referral fee, capped at $5.00 per SKU, when a qualifying refund or return reverses referral fee. The calculator's primary profit number does not apply an expected refund rate.
Seller-paid business costs
COGS, labels or other fulfillment, packaging, other variable costs, and ads you buy yourself. These are not TikTok Shop referral fee.
Old transaction fee
Settlement history may still mention a transaction or service fee label. This completed-order engine does not add that line back for modern US orders.

TikTok Shop referral fee
Referral fee is the principal platform selling fee this project models for current completed US orders. It is not creator commission, not Fulfilled by TikTok fulfillment, and not advertising.
Official US Seller University material commonly uses 6.0% for most listed categories. Specified eligible categories in the calculator use 5.0%. That is not a promise that one rate applies to every category, promotional program, account, or order forever.
TikTok Shop's documented calculation is referral rate × (Customer Payment + Platform Discount − Tax). This profitability model never asks for buyer sales tax and does not add it, so the engine's referral-fee base is customer payment before tax plus platform-funded discount. On the default example that base is $55.00 and the 6.0% referral fee is $3.30.
Customer payment and platform discounts
In this engine, the buyer-paid item amount is what the customer paid for the item after applicable seller or platform discounts, excluding shipping and sales tax. It is not a pre-discount list or sticker price. Quantity multiplies that unit amount. Customer-paid shipping is added next. Together those two lines are customer payment before tax.
Platform-funded discount is a separate field. TikTok Shop adds platform-funded discounts to the referral-fee base. They do not shrink that base. Seller-funded discounts that already reduced the amount the buyer paid should show up in the buyer-paid item amount. Do not treat every promotion type as identical, and do not enter a list price plus a TikTok-funded discount as if the buyer paid the list price.
The sourced illustration used by the calculator: if the buyer paid $50.00 for the item, TikTok funded $5.00, and shipping is $0.00, the referral-fee base is $55.00 and the 6.0% referral fee is $3.30. That is not the same as a $50.00 list price with a $5.00 discount that the buyer never paid.
Category-specific referral rates
The calculator currently auto-fills two sourced United States presets plus a custom rate:
- 6% — Most categories. United States TikTok Shop referral fee for most listed categories: 6% of (Customer Payment + Platform Discount − Tax). Buyer sales tax is omitted from this model.
- 5% — Eligible categories. United States TikTok Shop 5% referral fee for specified eligible categories, including Diamond, Gold, Jade, Platinum/Carat Gold, and Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald jewelry sub-categories, and listed Pre-Owned categories at the published 5% rate. Collectibles and Pre-Owned orders with a 3% rate on the portion above $10,000 are not auto-modeled; use Custom with the Seller Center rate.
Do not invent additional category percentages from this article. Collectible and Pre-Owned documentation also describes a 3% rate on the portion of a sale above $10,000. That higher-value tier is outside the current automatic model. If your listing uses a special, promotional, or Seller Center rate the presets do not match, use Custom. TikTok Shop is not always 6.0%.
Creator affiliate commission
Affiliate commission is distinct from TikTok Shop's referral fee. TikTok documents estimated commission as actual paid item price × commission rate. This calculator applies the rate you enter to buyer-paid item amount × quantity and does not include shipping in that commission base.
Merchant or self-sold orders through your own LIVE or video do not add creator commission in this model. Creator-attributed orders can. The calculator does not invent a typical creator percentage. You enter the collaboration rate that currently applies.
TikTok currently allows commission settings from 1% to 80% in Open and Target Collaborations. That is the supported collaboration range in current official material used here—not a recommended rate, not a default, and not what every creator sale uses. Real product-and-creator rates can sit anywhere in that range, or a different arrangement such as a flat-fee deal, which this engine does not auto-model.
How TikTok Shop fees combine
The completed-order flow below is the production engine, not a second formula written in this page. Refund probability is not mixed in.
Completed-order flow used by the calculator
Formula
Item customer payment = buyer-paid item amount per unit × quantity. Customer payment before tax = item customer payment + customer-paid shipping. Referral fee base and modeled revenue = customer payment before tax + platform-funded discount.
Referral fee = referral fee base × referral rate. Creator commission = item customer payment × affiliate rate on a creator sale, and 0 on an organic/self-sale.
Operating costs = product cost × quantity + fulfillment + packaging + other variable cost + allocated advertising. Profit = modeled revenue − referral fee − creator commission − operating costs.
Assumptions
United States TikTok Shop seller, USD, completed order. Buyer sales tax omitted. Platform-funded discounts are added to the referral-fee base. Creator commission is user-entered. Per-order fulfillment, packaging, other, and advertising amounts do not scale with quantity. Product cost does.
What is included
Buyer-paid item amount, quantity, customer-paid shipping, platform-funded discount, product cost, fulfillment, packaging, other variable cost, allocated advertising, sourced 6.0% and 5.0% US referral presets or a custom Seller Center rate, and organic vs creator sale with a user-entered affiliate rate.
What is excluded
Non-US markets, FBT rate-card charges, storage, expected refund rates, promotional referral rates, campaign service fees, flat-fee creator deals, collectible and pre-owned $10,000/3% referral tiers, buyer sales tax, and sales tax on referral fees for applicable Texas or West Virginia sellers.
Worked example: organic/self-sold order
These figures are an illustration, not recommended prices or fees. They come from the same production engine example as the calculator: a United States organic/self-sold order with buyer-paid item amount $50.00, quantity 1, customer-paid shipping $5.00, platform-funded discount $0.00, product cost $15.00, fulfillment $5.00, packaging $1.00, allocated advertising $10.00, and referral rate 6.0%. Creator commission is zero because the sale type is organic.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Modeled revenue / referral-fee base | $55.00 |
| Referral fee (6.0%) | $3.30 |
| Creator commission | $0.00 |
| Operating costs | $31.00 |
| Profit | $20.70 |
| Profit margin | 37.6% |
| Effective selling-cost rate | 6.0% |
| Break-even buyer-paid item amount | $27.98 |
| Target 20.0% margin buyer-paid item amount | $36.89 |
Modeled revenue ($55.00) is the fee base in this example: buyer-paid item amount plus customer-paid shipping, with no platform-funded discount. Referral fee ($3.30) is the TikTok Shop platform line. Operating costs ($31.00) are product, fulfillment, packaging, and allocated ads. Profit ($20.70) is what remains after both layers. Margin (37.6%) divides that leftover by modeled revenue—not by a list price.
Worked example: creator affiliate commission
The comparison below keeps every default order input the same and changes only the sale type to a creator affiliate sale at 15.0% commission. That 15.0% figure is an educational illustration. It is not a TikTok-mandated default, not a recommended collaboration rate, and not what every creator sale uses. Real seller-selected commissions can differ.
| Step | Organic | Creator at 15.0% |
|---|---|---|
| Modeled revenue | $55.00 | $55.00 |
| Referral fee | $3.30 | $3.30 |
| Creator commission | $0.00 | $7.50 |
| Operating costs | $31.00 | $31.00 |
| Profit | $20.70 | $13.20 |
| Profit margin | 37.6% | 24.0% |
| Break-even buyer-paid item amount | $27.98 | $33.29 |
| Target 20.0% margin amount | $36.89 | $46.27 |
Referral fee stays $3.30 because the referral-fee base did not change. Creator commission of $7.50 is applied to the $50.00 item customer payment, not to shipping. Profit falls to $13.20. Break-even and target-margin buyer-paid item amounts both rise because the same costs now sit under a higher variable take. One break-even price from the organic scenario does not survive this commission change.
Referral fee vs creator commission
These two lines are easy to collapse into “TikTok takes a percentage.” They are not the same cost.
- Referral fee is TikTok Shop's platform selling fee on the modeled referral-fee base. It applies in this completed-order model whether the sale is organic or creator-attributed.
- Creator affiliate commission is a seller-paid creator incentive on qualifying creator-attributed orders. The rate is set in the collaboration, not invented by this calculator.
They can stack. On the 15.0% illustration, the engine still charges $3.30 referral fee and also $7.50 commission. Not every order has creator commission. Organic/self-sold economics are the wrong template for a creator-attributed SKU, and the reverse is also true.
Refund administration fee
Be precise here. TikTok fee policy, calculator modeling, and operational loss are three different questions.
TikTok fee policy. When a refund, return, or cancellation occurs after the order is placed, TikTok Shop documents that the referral fee associated with the refunded amount can be reversed, minus a Refund Administration Fee equal to 20.0% of the refunded referral fee, capped at $5.00 per SKU (from May 15, 2025 in the sourced US articles). That is not 20.0% of the sale price. It is not automatically $5.00 on every refund. It is not a new referral fee.
TikTok's published sample uses a 6.0% referral fee of $6.30. A 50% refund equivalent of $3.15 refunded referral fee produces a $0.63 administration fee. A full refund of that $6.30 referral fee produces $1.26. If the default example's $3.30 referral fee were fully reversed, the same helper estimates $0.66 retained as administration fee—well below the $5.00 cap. The cap matters on larger refunded referral amounts, not as a flat charge.
TikTok also documents exceptions, including certain “buy now refund later” creator sample refunds and some buyer-initiated pre-shipment auto-cancellations. Those exceptions are not generalized here. Not every refund, cancellation, or after-sales path is the same.
Calculator modeling. The TikTok Shop Fee Calculator's primary profit result models a completed order. It does not apply an expected refund probability and does not subtract refund administration fee from the main profit number. The refund-administration helper exists for education, not as a hidden line in completed-sale profit.
Operational loss. Even when some referral fee is reversed, you may still lose outbound shipping, packaging, advertising already spent, and inventory that is damaged or not resellable. Creator commission after-sales can follow a different path: estimated commission after the buyer pays versus actual commission after after-sales, and later refunds may not always reverse a commission already paid to the creator. Confirm current TikTok Shop articles rather than assuming a slogan.
Old transaction fee and modern orders
Settlement reports can still show a historical “transaction fee” or similar service-fee label. The current completed-order model in this project does not add that old service fee to modern US orders. Referral fee is the platform selling fee modeled here. Do not copy an old settlement column on top of referral fee, and do not confuse the label with Etsy's or Shopify's transaction fees.
If a current Seller Center statement shows a charge this calculator does not auto-fill, enter it as a cost you actually incur or use Custom only for the referral percentage—do not invent a second TikTok take-rate in the guide. See How to Access Your Settlement Report.
Effective fee rate and profit
“TikTok Shop takes 6.0%” is not the same as “my total selling cost is 6.0%.” On the default organic example, the engine's effective selling-cost rate (referral fee plus creator commission, divided by modeled revenue) is 6.0% because there is no creator commission. Profit margin is still 37.6% after $31.00 of seller costs.
On the 15.0% creator illustration, the same selling-cost rate becomes 19.6% because commission stacks with referral fee. That is still not a universal TikTok take-rate. Real profitability can also include product cost, fulfillment, packaging, seller advertising, other variable costs, and the operational impact of refunds and returns. Do not replace that stack with a single “TikTok takes X%” estimate.
Break-even selling price
Minimum nonnegative buyer-paid item amount per unit where profit is at least zero under these assumptions. Quantity, customer-paid shipping, platform-funded discount, operating costs, referral rate, and creator rate stay fixed. The candidate is checked with the same profit function as the main result—this page does not keep a second formula.
On the default organic example, that amount is $27.98. After the 15.0% commission illustration, it rises to $33.29. If shipping and platform-funded discount already cover costs at a $0.00 buyer-paid item amount, the result is floored at $0.00. If referral plus commission leave no nonnegative solution, the amount is not applicable.
For pricing from costs and a target margin without TikTok Shop's schedule, use the Product Pricing Calculator or How to Price a Product for Profit. For advertising efficiency at a known price, use the Break-Even ROAS Calculator or Break-Even ROAS.
Target-margin price
Minimum nonnegative buyer-paid item amount per unit where profit divided by modeled revenue meets the target margin. The default example uses a 20.0% target because that is the calculator's example input—not a recommended universal margin for TikTok Shop sellers.
On the organic default, the engine's target-margin buyer-paid item amount is $36.89. On the 15.0% creator illustration it is $46.27. If the target is higher than the economics can support, the result is not applicable.
Common TikTok Shop profitability mistakes
- Treating customer payment as profit. The ticket is not leftover cash.
- Remembering referral fee and ignoring creator commission. Creator-attributed orders can stack both.
- Assuming all categories use the same referral rate. This model supports 6.0% and 5.0% presets, plus Custom—not one forever rate.
- Treating creator commission as mandatory on every order. Organic/self-sold orders do not add it here.
- Confusing referral fee with a legacy transaction fee. Do not add an old settlement label on top of modern referral fee.
- Treating the refund administration fee as 20.0% of sale price. It is 20.0% of refunded referral fee, capped at $5.00 per SKU.
- Forgetting platform-discount treatment in the fee base. Platform-funded discount is added to the referral-fee base. It is not the same as a seller-funded discount already in the buyer-paid item amount.
- Ignoring COGS, fulfillment, and packaging. Referral fee can be the smaller stack.
- Ignoring seller-paid advertising. Creator commission is not the only acquisition cost.
- Assuming one break-even price still applies after commission changes. Re-solve when sale type, rate, or costs change.
- Using a universal “TikTok takes X%” estimate. Effective rate depends on the order.
Practical TikTok Shop profitability workflow
- Confirm market and category. This guide and calculator auto-fill United States USD rules only.
- Verify the referral rate in Seller Center and current official TikTok Shop docs—not only a remembered 6.0% headline.
- Enter the buyer-paid item amount, quantity, customer-paid shipping, and any platform-funded discount as separate fields.
- Enter real product cost, fulfillment, packaging, and other variable costs.
- Choose organic/self-sold versus creator-assisted. Enter the actual creator commission when the order is creator-attributed.
- Add seller advertising allocated to the order.
- Inspect referral fee, optional creator commission, profit, and margin.
- Inspect break-even and target-margin buyer-paid item amounts.
- Re-run when commission, category, discounts, or costs change. If you need a marketplace-agnostic version, use the E-commerce Profit Calculator.
Use the TikTok Shop Fee Calculator
The TikTok Shop Fee Calculator asks for buyer-paid item amount, quantity, customer-paid shipping, platform-funded discount, product cost, fulfillment, packaging, other variable cost, allocated advertising, a sourced or custom referral rate, organic vs creator sale, optional affiliate commission, target margin, and optional monthly volume. It returns modeled revenue, referral fee, creator commission, operating costs, profit, profit margin, effective selling-cost rate, organic vs creator profit comparison when relevant, break-even buyer-paid item amount, and a target-margin buyer-paid item amount.
Results are planning estimates, not bookkeeping, tax advice, or a TikTok settlement statement. The primary result is a completed order. Refund administration fee is documented for education and is not mixed into that completed-sale profit.
Frequently asked questions
How much does TikTok Shop charge sellers?
There is no single take-rate that applies to every TikTok Shop order. In the current United States completed-order model, most listed categories use a 6.0% referral fee, and specified eligible categories use 5.0%. Creator-attributed orders can also pay a seller-selected affiliate commission. Product cost, fulfillment, packaging, advertising, and returns are separate. Confirm the rate currently shown for the listing in Seller Center and in current official TikTok Shop documentation.
What is the TikTok Shop referral fee in the US?
Referral fee is the principal TikTok Shop platform selling fee modeled here for current completed US orders. Official US material commonly uses 6.0% for most listed categories and 5.0% for specified eligible jewelry and listed Pre-Owned categories in this calculator. It is not a universal rate for every category, market, promotional program, or high-value collectible tier. Those special cases are not auto-filled.
Does every TikTok Shop order have a creator commission?
No. Merchant or self-sold organic orders through your own LIVE or video do not add affiliate commission in this model. Creator commission applies when the sale is attributed to a creator collaboration and you enter the rate that currently applies to that product and creator. It is not a TikTok-mandated default percentage on every order.
What is the difference between referral fee and affiliate commission?
Referral fee is TikTok Shop’s platform selling fee on the modeled referral-fee base. Affiliate / creator commission is a seller-set incentive paid on qualifying creator-attributed orders, calculated in this model as buyer-paid item amount × quantity times the entered rate (shipping is not in that commission base). They can stack on the same creator sale. Organic/self-sold orders still have referral fee and no modeled creator commission.
How is the TikTok Shop referral fee calculated?
TikTok Shop documents referral fee as referral rate × (Customer Payment + Platform Discount − Tax). This project omits buyer sales tax from the profitability model, so the engine’s referral-fee base is customer payment before tax plus platform-funded discount. Customer payment before tax is the buyer-paid item amount times quantity, plus customer-paid shipping. Seller-funded discounts that already reduced what the buyer paid for the item are not entered a second time as platform-funded discount.
What happens to the referral fee when an order is refunded?
TikTok Shop documents that when a refund, return, or cancellation occurs after the order is placed, the referral fee associated with the refunded amount can be reversed, minus a Refund Administration Fee, subject to documented exceptions. The TikTok Shop Fee Calculator’s primary profit result still models a completed order. It does not apply an expected refund rate.
What is the TikTok Shop refund administration fee?
Current US documentation used here describes a Refund Administration Fee equal to 20.0% of the refunded referral fee, capped at $5.00 per SKU. It is not a second referral fee, not automatically $5.00 on every refund, and not 20.0% of the sale price. TikTok also documents exceptions for certain sample and some buyer-initiated pre-shipment auto-cancellations; those cases are not generalized here.
Is the refund administration fee 20% of the order value?
No. The sourced US rule is 20.0% of the refunded referral fee, with a $5.00 per-SKU cap. A small refunded referral fee produces a small administration amount; a large one can hit the cap. Do not treat it as 20.0% of customer payment or as a flat $5.00 on every return.
Does TikTok Shop still charge a transaction fee?
The current completed-order model in this project does not add a separate transaction or legacy service fee. Referral fee is the platform selling fee modeled for modern US orders, plus optional creator commission when the sale is creator-attributed. Settlement reports may still show a historical “transaction fee” label. That line is not added back into these estimates. Confirm current settlement guidance in Seller Center rather than copying an old report column into profit math.
How do I calculate real TikTok Shop profit?
Start from modeled revenue (customer payment before tax plus platform-funded discount). Subtract referral fee, creator commission when the order is creator-attributed, and your operating costs (product, fulfillment, packaging, other variable cost, and allocated advertising). Profit margin divides leftover profit by modeled revenue. The TikTok Shop Fee Calculator runs that completed-order math and also solves break-even and target-margin buyer-paid item amounts. It does not automatically mix in an expected refund rate.
